Joining Bluesky

Adding to my other social media, I have now joined Bluesky, which is a new (ish) social platform meant to compete against X (formerly Twitter). I also have a profile on X, but rarely use it due to the direction of the site these days.
I have also now “parked” my username on several other sites, in case I need them for the future. If you find me on one of them, and I have 0 posts, ignore it - it’s one of my parked accounts.
My plan is to use Bluesky fairly actively however, if activity keeps growing like it currently is, so make sure to follow me there!
Like Lemmy and Mastodon, Bluesky is a “federated” social media platform, which in essence means that it is a conglomerate of several different instances of the same platform using a common communication standard. The main benefit to such an architecture is that there is not a single controlling party, which provides flexibility were the site to make decisions people don’t agree with. Unlike Lemmy and Mastodon, however, Bluesky isn’t truly “free”, as some functions are dependent on Bluesky’s own servers. It is however open sourced at least, and you can visit their GitHub organization profile here.
The feeling, at least right now, is very similar to early Twitter or Reddit - a closely knit and friendly community. Let’s hope this continues!
